Simon Atkinson - MS FRCS

I am a consultant surgeon in the upper gastrointestinal surgical unit at St Thomas’ Hospital and the Institute of Liver Studies at Kings College Hospital.

I originally qualified from The Royal London Hospital and then obtained surgical training in the South East Thames region. My surgical research was at Guy’s hospital and focussed on critical care in the surgical patient. Higher surgical training was at Guy’s Hospital and at the Royal Perth Hospital in Western Australia.

In 1999 I was appointed a consultant upper gastrointestinal and general surgeon to Guy’s & St Thomas’ Hospitals. In 2004 pancreatic surgery was centralised at Kings College Hospital, Denmark Hill and since then I have been a consultant pancreatic surgeon there as part of the Institute of Liver Studies.

My practice is primarily gastrointestinal and encompasses all aspects of upper gastrointestinal and pancreatic surgery. This includes surgery for acid reflux, hiatus hernia and gallstones as well as oesophageal and gastric cancers. My particular interest is in pancreatic disease such as pancreatitis, both acute and chronic, as well as pancreatic cancer. Much of the surgery I perform is laparoscopic or ‘keyhole’ surgery especially for gallstones, acid reflux and hiatus hernia. I perform upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and colonoscopy and also general surgical procedures such as hernia repairs and removal of cysts and lumps.
